Describe about melt spinning with sketch to produce polymeric fiber .

Melt Spinning :-
The process of spinning by which fiber or filament is produced from melted polymer chips by extruding through a spinneret  is called met spinning.

Process of Melt Spinning :

1. The fiber forming polymer chips fed into a hopper.
2. The polymer chips are electrically heated over melting point and melt in a heating grid. This converts the solid polymer into a viscous liquid .During heating process a cross linking or thermal degradation of polymer may occur leading to formation of lump
3. These   lumps can be easily removed from hot molten polymer by using a filter pack.
4. The hot molten polymer should be protected from the surrounding oxygen to avoid oxidative degradation . this is effected mostly by creating an inert environment around the molten polymer with nitrogen carbon dioxide or steam.
5. The molten polymer then enters a constant rate pump which in turn , pump the polymer melt through the spinneret from where a continuous and very fine filament emerges .
6. The polymer melt is thus forced through the fine holes of the spinneret from where a continuous and very fine filament emerges.
7. The filament emerging from the spinneret solidifies as it comes in contact with cold air.
8 .The cooling and solidifies process may be enhanced by a cold air blast .
9. Then solid filament emerging from the spinneret are subsequently wound on spindles

STATE THE PROPERTIES OF NYLON AND USES

TENACITY- NYLON 6,6-   4.6-5.8 gpd in dry and 4.0 -5.1 gpd in wet
NYLON 6-   4.5-5.8 gpd in dry &4.1-5.1 gpd in wet

Elastic recovery :-Standard filament of nylon 6,6 has an elastic recovery of 100% at upto 8% extension . Standard filament of nylon 6 has an elastic recovery of 100% at upto 6-8% extension.

Elongation :- Nylon 6,6 -26-32% in dry & 30-37% in wet.
Nylon 6 -23-42% in dry &27-34% in wet

Moisture regain:-    4-4.5%

Initial modulus:-  nylon6,6-40-60 gpd
                              Nylon 6-   35-50 gpd
Average stiffness :- nylon6,6  - 18gpd
                                   Nylon6-    23gpd
Specific gravity :      1.14

Effect of acid :  nylon6,6  - is attacked by mineral acid
Nylon6-    attacked by mineral acids but resistance to dilute boiling organic acids

Effect of alkali : nylon is substantially inert to alkali

Bleaching :  not attacked by oxi and reducing bleaches but harmed by chlorine and strong oxidizing bleaching.

Organic solvents: most organic solvent have little or no effect. Phenol metarcessol and formic acid dissolve the fiber .but solvents used in stain removal and dry cleaning , do not damage it.

Insects:  nylon can not serve as food for moths

Micro organism : not weakened

USES:
APPAREL: LADIES GLOVES ,  LADIES HOSE , SWIMMING WEAR ,HOISIERY FABRIC etc.

DOMESTIC: FURNISHING, CARPET, IN UPHOLSTERY AND ROPES & CORDS

INDUSTRIAL USE : NETS, TIRE CORDS, FILTERING CLOTH,SEWING THREAD, TOW ROPES ARE MADE OF NYLON
