Melt Spinning :-
The process of spinning by which fiber or filament is
produced from melted polymer chips by extruding through a spinneret is called met spinning.
Process of Melt Spinning :
1. The fiber forming polymer chips fed into a hopper.
2. The polymer chips are electrically heated over melting
point and melt in a heating grid. This converts the solid polymer into a
viscous liquid .During heating process a cross linking or thermal degradation
of polymer may occur leading to formation of lump
3. These lumps
can be easily removed from hot molten polymer by using a filter pack.
4. The hot molten polymer should be protected from the
surrounding oxygen to avoid oxidative degradation . this is effected mostly by
creating an inert environment around the molten polymer with nitrogen carbon dioxide
or steam.
5. The molten polymer then enters a constant rate pump
which in turn , pump the polymer melt through the spinneret from where a
continuous and very fine filament emerges .
6. The polymer melt is thus forced through the fine
holes of the spinneret from where a continuous and very fine filament emerges.
7. The filament emerging from the spinneret solidifies
as it comes in contact with cold air.
8 .The cooling and solidifies process may be enhanced
by a cold air blast .
9. Then solid filament emerging from the spinneret are
subsequently wound on spindles
